JOIN OUR OBWOLO NURSERY PROJECT

Since 2009 we have developed world leading expertise in creating & delivering inspiring playgrounds & play programmes to help vulnerable children learn, develop & heal. And now in 2023, you could help us to create the
PLAY-BASED NURSERY OF THE FUTURE!

We are inviting a group of incredibly inspiring people, just like you, to join us in April/May 2023 in Kisumu, Kenya for an unforgettable adventure and to help us build our first ever nursery at a local primary, a ground-breaking project that we hope will shape the future of early years education across Africa! The aim is to create a revolutionary early years educational setting that inspires a lifelong passion for learning, to replace the dark, derelict, and frankly dangerous nursery that is currently being used by 120 children at Obwolo Primary School.

Of course, it’s not all work and no play! You will have plenty of free time to discover the treasures around Kisumu and you can even extend your trip by adding on a safari to round this whole experience off.

WHY?

The majority of classroom structures in East Africa, like the one at Obwolo, are made from corrugated iron. Spaces are dark, cramped, hot, and uninspiring. We want to reinvent the way that classrooms are built ensure children have the best possible environment to learn and grow.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP?

As a charity we rely on the friendship and generosity of our supporters to help us deliver our work and to support our expansion so we can reach more children though our work.

WHAT WILL BE YOUR IMPACT?

The aim is to create a revolutionary early years educational setting that inspires a lifelong passion for learning. As a volunteer, you will work alongside our Uganda and Kenya build teams to bring this vision to life.

THE VISION

We are working with the amazing CAUKIN who have brought our vision to life with this crescent shaped nursery building which centres around a safe outdoor space for play and learning, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. The building will have 3 classrooms for the 3 different ages of the children at the nursery (Pre Primary I, Pre Primary II, and Play Group), and the raised roof will allow for plenty of ventilation and natural light. At the children’s request, there will be plenty of colour incorporated into the design too!

This nursery will blur the boundaries between outdoor play & indoor learning to create a seamless experience for children that supports teachers to deliver the early years curriculum most effectively. The design will incorporate various types of playful interventions, each with different levels of difficulty and stimulation whilst providing teachers with the necessary tools for classroom learning. It will be an environment that engages all the children’s senses & supports all areas of their development. The nursery will incorporate spatial features that provide opportunities to explore the 5 elements of play: Physical Play, Social Play, Constructive Play, Fantasy Play, and Games with Rules.

The nursery will be built using locally sourced materials that blend with the local environment and at a cost that is equal or less than an equivalent government built nursery.
