Creating play opportunities in one of Uganda’s most socially excluded regions

Posted on 11 April 2023

Independent games creator Gamely Games are longstanding supporters of Play Action International. Through their playful partnership, they have provided funding to enhance children’s education in one of Uganda’s most socially excluded regions.

Children, parents and teachers of Alyec Juk Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre & Primary School is attended by 960 children, with the ECD centre attended by up to 80 children from the surrounding area. It was identified that there were huge gaps in the provision of educational opportunities for these children. Identifying this need and working alongside the local community to deliver a play-based solution that would benefit children there for years to come, and with generous funding from Gamely Games, Play Action International set to task.

In just a few weeks, Play Action created:

The ECD centre at Alyec Juk has seen a greater influx of children, growing from 80 – 240+ children, meaning that play opportunities were needed more than ever, as demand for access to education has increased. Thanks to Gamely, the school and ECD centre have seen high levels of engagement from parents as well as children, in particular with girls and their fathers. Other, positive outcomes in the few weeks since the playground has been installed and training initiated include greater connection between teachers, parents and children alike. The benefits of play have already been seen in such a short space of time and we can’t wait to see how more children in this area of Uganda will benefit in time to come.

Play Action wants to say a massive thank you to our partners Gamely Games for their incredible support for this project.
