Rhys Caldecott is a casino terms and conditions analyst based in Cardiff. He writes every page on this site. He reads every casino in the same order: terms first, lobby second, welcome banner last.

Background

For six years Rhys worked on the promotions compliance desk of an online casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. His job was to read every bonus before it went live and find the sentence that would later be argued over. This covered the maximum bet, the game weighting, the cashout cap, and the method-matching rule. When a player lost money on a promotion and legal asked for a line to prevent a repeat, he helped write it.

He now works as an independent analyst and reads casinos from the other side of the desk. The habit has not changed. Offshore sites write their terms in much the same way as a licensed one, with one difference: nobody in Birmingham reads them afterwards. That difference is the subject of this site.

What he reads first

The general bonus terms, followed by the withdrawal section and then the account terms. Within the bonus terms, he goes directly to the maximum bet allowed while a bonus is active. This is usually a single sentence and often the one that voids a win. Next is game weighting, as a table player who assumes blackjack counts toward wagering is often wrong by a factor of ten. He then checks the cap on what a bonus can pay out. The percentage on the banner is the last thing he looks at. His reviews show the turnover figure in pounds before the percentage.

He separates what a document says on paper from what happens in practice, and states which is which. A licence is reported as the site declares it. A payout rail is described from the cashier page. Where he has put his own money through a cashier, he says so and gives the time.

Corrections, a clause that has changed since a review was written, or a payout dispute you would like recorded go to editor@playactioninternational.org. Rhys reads every message. He cannot release funds or speak to an operator on your behalf. A documented refusal is noted against the review and, where the same complaint repeats, it moves the score.
