Today, 10 December marks Human Rights Day where every year people across the world celebrate the rights of everyone, “regardless of their race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”1
This year’s Human Rights Day focusses on the theme ‘Recover Better’ and relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and how we recover. Central to Human Rights and Human Rights Day are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which includes Article 31 of the UN Convention on The Rights of the Child, where play is enshrined in this right.
Play Action International has been responding to the needs of the communities we work with by committing to installing handwashing facilities in every playground we’ve installed and every playground we plan to install in the future. By introducing handwashing facilities, we are helping towards eliminating potential child sickness and ensuring that opportunities to play are safe as well as exciting. After all, play can be messy!
As part of this initiative, we have started to install multi-user handwashing facilities as pictured in Kenya, where we have just started delivering our enriching play programmes, along with our partners The Nasio Trust.
As part of this programme of work, we are working to deliver play-based training to teachers and caregivers to help facilitate enriching education through play. We’re incredibly excited to work on this programme – the first from the Play Action team in Kenya!
